Candidates for the No. 1 Overall Pick Not Named Washington or Jacksonville

by Ryan Mercier

Go to any bar in the country and… wait, scratch that. In 2020, imagine actually going to a bar while sitting on your couch for the 11,000th hour in a row and all of the “experts” there would tell you Washington and Jacksonville are going to be the two worst teams. Football is never that predictable.

Here are some teams, in order, that may have the worst record in the NFL this season including a dark horse (pun intended).

1. Carolina Panthers

With all the talk of the Jaguars supposedly “Tanking for Trevor,” the Clemson quarterback may only need to drive from South Carolina to the North. Teddy Bridgewater may be the most milquetoast QB in the league and Christian McCaffrey can only do so much. Times may be better ahead under new head coach Matt Rhule and a nice young group of defenders.

2. New York Giants

Danny Dimes may provide some exciting play and the G-Men can hope for far fewer fumbles. SaQUAD Barkley may carry some fantasy teams to championship glory. Beyond that, Big Blue has no other player on offense or defense to get excited about unless TE Evan Engram realizes his potential. Not to mention the Giants are in the hands of rookie head coach Joe Judge and his antics straight from 1950s pro football.

3. New York Jets

Ouch, a double-whammy for the great state of New York (or New Jersey?). The Jets are ahead in this exercise because their young QB Sam Darnold is in his third season. If the lights truly come on, anything is possible. Adam Gase is much-maligned and the pressure only gets bigger in East Rutherford, NJ. Go look at the starters on defense for the Jets. Seriously, go do it.

4. Denver Broncos

Even before Von Miller’s unfortunate injury, the Broncos would have been right here in this spot on this list. The general fan overrates the importance of wide receivers and oh my goodness the Broncos threw themselves a wide receiver party. The flashiness of this latest draft from John Elway set off some internal alarms that Denver may get a cruel smite from the Football Gods. The defense has nice pieces all over but perhaps some of those veteran bodies don’t hold up. The real question is, would it really be that surprising if Drew Lock is a total disaster at QB?
