Oh, football. We love you. It’s so good to have you back.
Brady the Sailor Man
Tom Brady’s first voyage as the captain of the Buccaneers’ ship was not a success. Brady’s passes sailed on him all day long. Everyone will know soon enough if he’s truly lost it or if he can capture the magic again, but there is one important thing to remember. The legacy of the greatest QB of all-time cannot take any negatives at age 43, it can only grow. The same goes for Brady’s Week 1 opponent, Drew Brees. Essentially, once a quarterback turns 40 anyone who pokes holes into a great player’s career in those seasons is a moron.
Aaron Rodgers is Not in Decline
No quarterback was more disrespected going into 2020 than Rodgers. He was being ranked outside of top-5 lists and taken alarmingly low in fantasy drafts. Yes, there were good reasons for writers and fans to point to. The Packers themselves drafted a QB in the first round. Then came Sunday, where Rodgers threw for 364 yards with four touchdowns. His numbers speak for themselves but the way he looked on the field speaks even louder.
Jacksonville and Washington Win
Projected to be the two worst teams in football, both the Jaguars and Washington Football Team scored victories over supposed playoff contenders. It’s just one week but this is a reminder of how the Groupthink Football Machine of the offseason can be blown up by the first Sunday afternoon.
McCarthy’s Horrible Decision
It is unfathomable that champions of football analytics would like to argue the Cowboys going for it on 4th and 3 was a good decision. McCarthy clearly should have chosen to kick a field goal and tie the game. Instead, Dallas was left hoping for late game heroics from Dak Prescott and incorrectly thinking refs were to blame for its loss. McCarthy should still be a boost for the Cowboys 2020 season, but this was an awful introduction.
Final Notes
- Like last season, the Lions remain elite at almost winning.
- Cam Newton had a nice start to his Patriots career.
- Watch out for the Cardinals.
