Watermelons and the Beautiful Disaster of the NFC East
With six weeks to go in the entire NFL season, all four teams in the NFC East have exactly three wins. Who will win the division? This is the best race in years simply because nothing like this has ever happened and the circumstances are unique. Also, yes, every team is absolutely terrible.
Carson Wentz has clearly had all of his football powers taken away from him, Space Jam style. Philadelphia lost to the Browns on Sunday but remain on top of the East thanks to their ever-so-impactful tie versus the Bengals. Washington turned in a very nice story as Alex Smith earned his first victory as a starter since coming back from his gruesome injury. Of course, he won against Cincinnati which lost its rookie QB Joe Burrow to a horrible injury on Smith’s happy day. The New York Giants were on a bye. Smart move.
Then, there are the Dallas Cowboys. Andy Dalton led them on a game-winning drive in a close game against the Minnesota Vikings but no one cares because the real story came much earlier. In a meeting on Saturday night, head coach Mike McCarthy emphasized his team’s objectives by smashing watermelons with a sledgehammer. No, really. Close your eyes and imagine McCarthy swinging a giant hammer and smashing watermelons, because it happened.
Don’t Crown the 2020 QB Draft Class Just Yet
On the season, Justin Herbert of the L.A. Chargers has thrown for 22 TDs, six INTs, and other such nice looking numbers. Tua Tagovailoa has come in to start during the Miami Dolphins’ best stretch in years and the aforementioned Burrow has had plenty of moments in his young career as the No. 1 overall pick. But, let’s get real.
Herbert has led the Chargers to two wins in his entire time as the starter in Los Angeles. Those two victories? Wins against the 1-9 Jaguars and the 0-10 New York Jets. Tua was just benched for “performance” and in the worst news out of Week 11, Burrow will miss the rest of the season.
Everyone loves a shiny new toy but not every QB becomes a raging success. There are signs on both sides of the coin for all three players to either ascend to great heights or become the next middling starters agonizing their fanbase.
Final Notes
- Lions were SHUT OUT by the Carolina Panthers who were missing their starting QB and Christian McCaffrey. People loved pointing out how Detroit was 3-4-1 last year with Matthew Stafford healthy. This year, they’re 4-6. It’s time to move on.
- Chiefs are not mentioned enough on this site. They’re incredible and should win the Super Bowl again.
- Packers/Colts was a beautiful uniform matchup and entertaining game. In the long run, the Colts win and Packers loss won’t mean much to either team.
