NFL Week 14 Quick-Hitters

by Ryan Mercier

Chiefs to Rest of the League, “Goodnight, Everybody!

Mahomes threw three interceptions. The Chiefs had four turnovers overall. Miami took a 10-0 lead to begin the game. And none of it mattered.

Kansas City took the lead by halftime and was suddenly up 30-10 by the end of the third quarter. The Dolphins are a team with a unique sense about them ready to throw a curveball at any opponent. Even if they aren’t the best opponent KC has played, this may be the victory which leaves other Super Bowl contenders feeling utterly hopeless.

The Chiefs can be knocked around and thrown entirely off their game and still pummel anyone in their path. With the No. 1 seed in hand, the last chapter of the 2020 season may already be written.

Game of the Year?

This week on Monday Night Football will be the Pittsburgh Steelers (alright, not bad) against the Cincinnati Bengals (who at ESPN let this happen?). A slightly better matchup in the AFC North was played this past Monday in an epic battle between the Baltimore Ravens and Cleveland Browns.

So much was on the line. Not just in the playoff race, either. In 1996, the Browns moved to Baltimore and became the Ravens only to win two Super Bowls since then. Cleveland, not so much. When all seemed lost after an awful interception from Baker Mayfield, the Browns erased a 34-20 deficit. This could have been the biggest win for the franchise since it respawned in 1999.

Instead, last year’s MVP Lamar Jackson made a dramatic return to action from a long absence in the locker room on 4th and 5 with two minutes remaining. Jackson, of course, didn’t just convert fourth down but threw a 44-yard TD pass to crush fans in Ohio once again. It is hard to pack so much drama into one game.

Final Notes

  • Packers are suddenly the No. 1 seed in the NFC. Feels kind of quiet, doesn’t it?
  • Alright Josh Allen, can you keep this up in the postseason?
  • Please tell me Mitchell Trubisky is going to play well enough that the Bears keep him. Comedy.
