Quick-Hitters: NFL Draft Opinions Edition

by Ryan Mercier

Full disclosure: I am not a Draft expert. Every year, I love to check in on the top quarterbacks and read up on other prospects. This includes literally just watching YouTube highlights (yes, the most basic idea possible) and reading several opinions on the players I tend to really like or dislike. Let’s have some fun.

QB Rankings

After checking out each of the top-5 quarterback prospects in 2021 I had an uneasy revelation: I agree with the New York Jets.

  • 1. Trevor Lawrence – Don’t overthink it.
  • 2. Zach Wilson – The style and flair Wilson plays with is shocking. There’s a cockiness you can see from afar. Sure, those traits could eventually blow up in the Jets’ faces as it often does. There is just something about him which sets him apart from the other choices.
  • 3. Justin Fields – There is a calmness to Fields’ game. Yeah, he can bomb it down the field and run around but that could end up being the trait which gives him success as a starter in the NFL.
  • 4. Trey Lance – Every year there’s a QB I expect to like more than others and my first instinct is confirmed or knocked down a peg. The calm from Fields is the exact opposite with Lance. He makes several great plays but loves to leave the pocket way too early.
  • 5. Mac Jones – He’s supposed to go No. 3 overall. Uh, OK. I guess.

Long story short, I would not want to be a team picking a quarterback in the first round after Lawrence and Wilson go off the board.

Players Who Should Go Higher Than Expected

Azeez Ojulari – EDGE

This post on the website was really just made for Ojulari. Simply put: Star potential. He is a ferocious homing missile to whoever has the ball. He could end up as the best pass rusher from this draft and some do not have him mocked in the first round.

Christian Barmore – DT

Barmore has been picked apart over the last several months but he is worth a first round pick. In fact, he might be the only DT worthy of a first round pick. It’s hard to find big guys who can play. He will be one of the more fascinating names to watch on Thursday night. Will he be overdrafted due to his position’s dearth in this class or fall into someone’s lap late?

Players Who Should Go Lower Than Expected

Trevon Moehrig – S

Similar to Barmore’s situation, there are really no other safeties who seem to be considered for the first round. Nothing about Moehrig sounds bad but the issue is it doesn’t sound like he has any tremendous traits either. He will be overdrafted by someone desperate for a safety.
